Will I lose any features or anything if I choose to automatically save in .doc so its more compatible with other computers? I'm not even sure what the new extension does/benefits?

.docx is considered to be more reliable.

Not that it matters so much these days, but .docx file sizes are a lot smaller than .doc. This is because the .docx file format is just a zip file with XML data in it. (change the file extension to .zip in Windows and you can open it like a zip)
