Not that it matters so much these days, but .docx file sizes are a lot smaller than .doc. This is because the .docx file format is just a zip file with XML data in it. (change the file extension to .zip in Windows and you can open it like a zip)
If you open a docx file in an earlier version of Word, you don't lose the extra items that you created, but you will likely lose the ability to edit them. See this link for a list of what gets changed:
