Not sure how to describe it so I'll attach a screenshot. This is what it looks like when I open a blank document.

I've tried removing Normal.dotm, com.microsoft.Word.plist, and com.microsoft.Office.plist but it didn't work. I also tried reinstalling it, but that didn't work. I'm not sure what is wrong with it.

Edit: Well I changed the layout and fixed it, but the top part of the program still isn't fixed. It normally has a save button there. The buttons that are normally there aren't.

Right click in the toolbar area and go to Toolbar. See what options you have. Check standard if not already.

Standard is checked but the options are faded. I messed around with the settings and have the button labels there. Looks like the normal options are there, but I'm not sure how the images for them changed.
