Microsoft today announced a major update for its Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps, which will see the introduction of real-time co-authoring, drag and drop support on the iPad, universal link support for shared files, and more.

With support for real-time co-authoring, multiple people can contribute to and edit documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on iOS devices. Changes made by each user will sync within seconds, plus you'll be able to see everyone that's working on a document and what they're working on.

Real-time co-authoring support on iOS devices follows the introduction of the feature in Microsoft's Mac apps earlier this month.

Microsoft is also adding drag and drop support for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the iPad, which means you'll be able to drag files between Microsoft apps and quickly add links, text, photos, graphs, and more.

The three apps will also support universal links, which means anytime you're sent a shared Word, PowerPoint, or Excel file, it'll open right in the app rather than requiring you to authenticate in a browser, and there are new Accessibility features like improved VoiceOver support for better navigation.

Microsoft today also announced major changes for the OneDrive app, which includes an overhauled interface, support for the Files app, drag and drop support, and several other new features.

Microsoft says the new functionality in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint will be available "in the coming days" through updates available in the iOS App Store.

Microsoft Word [Direct Link], Microsoft Excel [Direct Link], and Microsoft PowerPoint [Direct Link] can all be downloaded from the App Store for free.

Who in the hell actually works on a document like this?

Would drive me batty(er).

The iOS version has the basic features to do alot of work. What is really missing is the ability to open two or more documents, spreadsheets etc. People who prepare presentations, proposals or other similar work, need this ability. Otherwise devices like the ipad pro will never be a true laptop replacement

But will real time co-authoring work with Dropbox? I assume it will not.

For me, the most necessary feature to have in a modern-day office suite is Autosave, which was FINALLY brought to Office for Mac. Unfortunately, it won’t work with Dropbox, despite such functionality in its iOS apps.

Where I work, we had the opportunity to have the entire team brainstorming on different parts of an organization-wide grant application using Google Docs. We had 10 people simultaneously editing different parts of the document in a conference room (and bouncing around the document to refer to the realtime changes).

This is not something I do everyday but when I've needed to use it, Google Docs did an outstanding job.

Having said that, I find MS Office on mobile platforms to be less useful than Google's online suite and Microsoft's own MS Office Online.

Hey Microsoft... instead, how about a full functioning version of Office for iOS that can be used on the iPad Pro 10.5 and 12.5" models without having to subscribe to Office 365?

That too. :D

Would you pay the price of a full version of Office?

O365 is great in higher ed. Students use Office a lot on iPad. Sharing files, etc. is very useful.

I just wish drag and drop would come to OneNote. Disappointed to see that OneNote was left out of this update.

Come on iWork team. Let’s see some real innovation. Change the game like the original Keynote did.

I’m confused about this - I don’t have the new 10.5 iPad Pro but my 9.7” seems to full functionality. Did something change?

Nothing has changed. Microsoft allows full function on devices 10" and below. Larger than that requires paying for the app or a subscription to O365.

So, the wording of the release is very suspect. "Microsoft is also adding drag and drop support for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the iPad, which means you'll be able to drag files between Microsoft apps and quickly add links, text, photos, graphs, and more."

Does that mean I can't drag and drop text from Safari into Word? It sounds like I can just drag and drop between MS apps.

with 10 hours laptops and SSDs, if you need to get work done just buy one of the laptops. I am sorry but the touch gestures and the current unstable iOS will not suffice except for light work.

If you really expect tablets to replace work machines, some serious innovation needs to happen.
