If this has already been discussed before, for give me. (I couldn't find that discussion.)

The question, though is, without having Thunderbolt, can I connect a second monitor?

(And, yes, I know that I am just El Capitan away from having to buy a new iMac.) (Just haven't been overly excited by the more recent incarnations of iMacs.)
 
I think your iMac has a Mini-DVI out port? You should be able to use that with this adaptor with a DVI monitor.
