I can't explain why it keeps doing this. At random intervals, the screen will flash blue(like the blue you see before you log in) and I am presented with an empty desktop and all my work has gone. Almost like I've just restarted, but the blue flash happens for less than 2 seconds.
Please help?

Yikes!

First thing: Back up immediately.

Have you gone through and reset PRAM and the SMC? May or may not help, but it can't hurt.

It could be a failing hard drive. Run Disk Utility and "Verify Disk." If that isn't it, you could have a bad RAM stick, or a problem on the logic board.

The hard drive checks out fine in Disk Utility.
