Mid 2009 Macbook White Weird Graphic Problem

Hi I have a mid 2009 White Macbook and have a very strange issue. The monitor output from the mini DVI port (using the DVI adapter) outputs a very distorted or just plain black picture, while the screen on the laptop works fine. I took it to the Apple store to verify it wasn't my cheap mini DVI to DVI adapter. They told me it was the logic board. They wanted $300 to replace it. I laughed and left.

Any clues? Wondering if a reball would solve the issue.
