Hi folks,

I am trying to use a Dell UP2718Q as a secondary monitor with my MacBook Pro 7,1 (13-inch, mid 2010). Obviously this is a strange matchup but I am teleworking now (sure many are in the same boat) and I've been allowed to bring home my monitor but not my (Windows) machine. So I'm using my old MacBook, running High Sierra 10.13.6, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, I recently maxed out the RAM to 16GB, video card is stock NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB. To connect the macbook to the monitor, I am using a miniDP to DP cable (it's the same cable I use to connect the monitor to my work machine, so I know the cable is not defective).

My issue is that on the Dell screen, it generally feels sluggish and what's worse, sometimes there is black/white patchiness and strange distortions in application windows. I am suspecting it is some problem with my video card not supporting the 4K monitor or 60Hz refresh rate (currently it's only 30Hz, I can't increase it), but I am not knowledgeable in this area so I came here to get confirmation/tips.

Is this monitor simply incompatible with my macbook, or is there anything I can do to fix the issues? Is the issue with my cable? I came across this article but it seemed slightly risky, and I am not sure if it applies equally to my macbook. Any insight y'all may have to what is going on would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Clayton
