I have two problems with my 15" MBP, if I remember correctly it is from the first set that had the unibody case rather than detachable battery.
1) Around a year to 18 months ago, beer was spilt on my laptop. I immediately turned it off and unplugged it, and then left it propped up in a V shape several feet away from a light blowing fan, and left it for 5 days without turning it on. Luckily, I think this let me get out with the best case scenario, the laptop has worked at full performance ever since. I've installed bootcamp, installed software updates, with no problems I can think of.
Other than a slightly sticky keyboard which as alleviated over time, the one consequence is that it no longer works on battery, it must be plugged in to AC power all the time, if the cord gets kicked out, it will shut down. If I close the lid while plugged in, after ~10 seconds, it will go to sleep, and if i unplug it, take the laptop somewhere else, and replug it in, it will "wake up" with all the same windows, programs, etc open.
How likely is it that simply buying a new battery will fix this? Is it possible there is something wrong with not just the battery, but whatever component inside the computer that charges the battery (I have next to no idea how this stuff works). I am asking bc its a pretty long trip to an Apple Store for me, and would like to know how realistic a fix is, and what I should expect to cost. I would also prefer not to get ripped off and told I need something expensive in addition to a new battery if that's not true. (Although I'm aware that it needs to be opened up and looked at to properly be diagnosed, any input is very appreciated).
2) Rarely, this happens maybe once every month or two, sometimes longer in between but its semi-regular, when I plug in AC power to start it up, instead of starting I get three beeps in succession, instead of it starting up as usual. Then I unplug it and usually wait 5-10 minutes, to try again. ~2/3rds of the time, on the second attempt it starts up fine. Maybe 1/3rd of the time, I get the beeps again, and have to either try a few times, or if I don't need to use it, I don't start it up until a few hours, and it will work. Google tells me this may have something to do with a RAM error? It doesn't seem fatal bc it's been off and on for a long time now, but its obviously not good.
If anyone has any advice for how to deal with either of these, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much in advance.
