i want to put an SSD in my 21.5 mid 2010 imac.

Is the only way to swap out the 500MB for the SSD.

I imagine i could have both if i ditched the superdrive?

Try buying an external FireWire 800 enclosure for the SSD, that way you don't need to do surgery on your iMac. You will max out at ~80 MB/s but most of the benefit of SSDs is fast random access times so that's almost irrelevant.
