When I try to start up my MBP I get a flashing question mark inside a folder. Ran internet recovery and when I get to the disk utility my hard drive isn't listed on the left. Instead, I see the SuperDrive and disk0 and Mac OS X Base System.

From what I've read online my hard drive is dead. Is this true? If so, I'm assuming the only option is to replace the hard drive. I'm not really interested in jumping to a SSD so what brand of HDD should I be looking at?

Thanks

I would contend that you would be making a mistake by not going with an SSD. If you run 10.10 or higher, the SSD is almost a requirement for a smooth running system.

Not sure of HDD brands, but there are 500Gig SSDs for under $200 now.

Good Luck!!

WD Black would be my first choice. Decent warranty with the "black" drives. 750GB drive is less than $100.
