I currently have 2 23" monitors connected to the stock "Apple" 5770 on my Mac Pro 5,1. They are connected to the mini display ports with 2 mini-display to HDMI adapters. I once saw that a third monitor would work, only with a dual-link adpater. Now... what I see now with a little googling is that a single-link adapter would supposedly work as long as I don't want to go above 1920x1080, but I'm still a little confused...so what do I need to get:

- my 2 current monitors connected to their HDMI port (they don't have DVI) at 1920x1080
- a 3rd monitor, DVI or HDMI, at 1920x1080

(VGA connection is not an option)

The 5770 has one DVI and 2 mini-display ports.

Do I need one single-link adapter, or 2, or a dual-link adapter, or 2? I'm aware that a DVI to DVI adpater or DVI to HDMI will depend on which monitor I end up with, obviously.

I do film music and I'd like to have a 3rd monitor so my video is on a separate screen and it doesn't "get in my way" on the other 2 monitors. So it's a pretty basic use. Working mainly in Pro Tools, I have the edit window on one monitor, and the mix window on the other one.

I just want to make sure which, and how many adapters I actually need without necessarily buying a new card...

Your HD 5770 supports two legacy connections (read: DVI, HDMI or passive DisplayPort adapters) at a time. If you want to drive more than two displays concurrently, every additional one has to be a true DisplayPort device (read: native DisplayPort monitor or active DisplayPort adapter).

You don't necessarily need a dual-link adapter (although it would work, since all of them are active adapters), you just have to make sure that the single-link adapter is an active on (most cheap ones are not).

Google "Radeon Eyefinity" for more details.
