Long story short, I lent the above to my university student son almost 4 years ago - he has (very apologetically) given it back to me with just a black screen on start up. It seems to charge ok, chimes on start up and both the keys and the Apple logo on rear light up but the screen is completely black.

I’m a pretty non techie person (I love this MacBook though and would love to get it going again) but have tried various key pressing techniques found online with no success. I wouldn’t normally attempt anything myself but, due to lockdown, have given it a go. The last time I booted it, a few minutes ago, it did something different and now sounds like the fans are going (didn’t think this had fans but that might be my faulty memory!)

Any advice? My son is adamant that it hasn’t been dropped or had anything spilt on it.

Many thanks
Jules
