My mid 2015 macbook pro's battery suddenly started inflating a few weeks ago. So I went on to Apple's recall program, my serial number did not qualify. I find it so strange that this happened to me as my laptop is the same model as the recall, yet it is not considered "affected". But my the battery is clearly enlarged.

$200 from Genius I was quoted and that this is normal from any battery and that my issue is due to natural wear.

Felt a little off to me.

The recall isn't for battery swelling (which can happen to any lithium ion battery...). It is for defective batteries that could overheat and pose a fire risk

The Genius is correct. Swelling means the battery is oxidizing inside and has started out-gassing. This is happens as batteries age and go through charging cycles. The issue is the gas produced can combust.

The reason for the serial number check is that there were defective batteries installed in certain production runs of the laptop. Your was not one of those production runs.

For the $200 you get a top case replacement. This includes new battery, keyboard, trackpad, and the Aluminum plate where you rest your fingers.
