I'm looking at getting a mid-2015 or 2016+ MBP 15" to use in clamshell mode as a permanent desktop. It will rarely ever be used as a laptop. I will be using it for normal tasks, parallels, and CAD work. There is about a 500.00 difference between the models and other than the convenience of the TB3 port for using a dock. Is there a reason to go with the 2016+ over the mid-2015?

If you really want a desktop why not get an iMac? Much more bang for the buck.

If you do go for the laptop I would avoid the 2016. A lot of 1st year of a new design issues.

Quite a bit newer hardware in the 2016's I believe.

If you're going to use it exclusively in clamshell mode, most all the butterfly keyboard concerns are moot as well.

I'd probably go 2016+ in your case.

What type of screen are you going to hook it up to?

A retina/4k+ experience will really really tax a 2015 (I know - I did it for a while a couple years back), and that alone might push you to newer GPU's in the newer laptops
