Just gave a Mid-2018 Macbook Pro to someone to use at our office. She said the mic wasn't working. Sure enough, when I go into Sound in System Preferences, click on Input, it lists 'MacBook Pro Microphone' but no sound is registered. Same results after a clean install of Catalina and Big Sur so I'm confident it's a hardware problem with the built-in mic. Apple wants an outrageous $747 to repair it. Looking for input from anyone who may have replaced one of these. I found this but it's out of stock. Any recommendations on where I can find a replacement microphone and a guide to replace it.

It would probably be a risky job to try and replace it yourself. There's a high possibility something else could get broken in the process.

My recommendation:
Get a decent EXTERNAL USB mic and use that instead.
