Mid2012 MB Air - best connection to monitor?

We have a mid-2012 Air, which has a Thunderbolt 1.0 port. We want to buy a nice 27 inch monitor (perhaps a Dell 27"). What's the best way to connect -- seems my options are Thunderbolt > HDMI adaptor....not sure what else.

I can't quite figure out if this version of Thunderbolt is directly compatible with Display Port "in" on a current-day monitor.

You could also use a mini displayport to DVI cable if the monitor has a DVI input or a mini displayport to displayport if the monitor has a displayport input.
