I have a 3 mifi and get good 3g coverage and the ability to link other stuff to it.

I am thinking of getting an iphone and use it to tether.

I wondered if the mifi had better reception (hardware) than the iphone or are they technically the same thing?

I have actually used both. They both had very, very similar range and the speeds were identical (Verizon). Almost 100% the same, save for the fact that the iPhone can do Bluetooth tethering. Get whatever is going to fit within your budget. If you get the iPhone (4 or earlier) you can jailbreak it and enable tethering with a one-time pay application instead of a monthly charge and it will just use your existing data plan. Be careful with this if you use AT&T as I've heard stories of them cracking down and applying the tethering charge to your account.
