i recently purchased imac, but did not have time to paly with it, becasue of work :(
ive had my iphone, ipad, and ipod for awhile, and i know that if i purchase some app from appstore with my ipad, and i can download it for free on my iphone if i use same account.

I was wondering if that works the same way with apps for imac.

iOS and Mac OS require separate software.

To add to that;

On Mac OS X (the operating system used in Mac computers), if you download an app from the Mac App Store, you will be able to re-download it on any other Mac using same iTunes/App Store account.

Enjoy your new Mac. Don't let it sit in the dust ;)
