My 11 year old son has a 6 series Ipad that he bought himself. It is the only Apple product in our family. For his birthday he is asking for an apple watch. It is my understanding that a watch must be connected to a phone, not an Ipad. My question is if we got the cheapest version (3 I think) of the Apple watch can it be connected to a Apple phone that does not have a phone number? His cousin has an old phone (version 6) that we could use to connect to WiFi only. We are not interested in text or emails on the watch. He wants to use it for music, time, calulator, fitness tracking etc. Will those options still work if he has a phone with out a phone number/data package?

The apple watches require a 6s or later. I think Apple watch needs access to a phone with data or to be a cellular model.

So the old phone we could get is a 6s. Do you know if you can you use a pay as you go option with an Apple phone? I'm trying to think of way to make this work for him.

I'm pretty sure you can use an iPhone without an active data plan, as long as you can connect it to wifi. I've done this in the past with my old Apple Watch (connect it to my old phone with no service plan) and it worked fine.
