My wife and i both have macbooks which we use on the go all the time. The iMac would be great to keep at home, but i was wondering if there was a away for our macbooks to sync with the iMac login, so the data is the same. We would have our own logins and any changes on the macbooks would update on the iMac and the same for the iMac updating on the macbook..

I'm not sure if this makes sense..

I wish it was that easy and I would have a MBP in addition to my iMac. Perhaps others here have a solution. Seamless is best of course.

What I use is Air Drop. If both machines are running Lion then you can use Air Drop to drag and drop files between the two machines wirelessly. Some other options are services like drop box but there is a fee involved. Air Drop is really simple to use and pretty fast. There isn't really a way to make it automatic like you want sadly but using Air Drop to keep your machines sync'd isn't really a problem.
