Migrating files from 1 mac to another

I'm pretty sure we're going to buy a new mac soon but have some questions about migrating files.

Currently my wife and I have separate logins on my PowerBook but this has just been annoying so I'd like to merge the two into 1 user account on the new computer. Is it possible to move all of the iPhoto and iTunes data from both accounts over?

Do I need a FireWire cable to do this?
