I am unable to migrate from iPhotos 8.1.2 to the new Photos app. I recently updated from Mavericks straight to El Capitan (bypassed Yosemite). All the other apps are working well, with the exception of Photos.

It gets hung up at 24% and will sit there for over half a day. I have an medium-sized library (<1,000 photos), but it is several years old. I have tried to rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager without any success.

I am looking for ANY solution at this point even one that might erase metadata (but I would prefer to keep it of course).

Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

I haven't tested importing iPhoto 8.1.2 library to Photos but I strongly suspect you will need latest 9.6.1 version.

Alternative is to export your library into folders and import that into Photos, but some metadata will likely be lost.

You could also wait a couple of 10.11 updates and see if Apple improves Photos importing capability. Unfortunately Apple has merged Photos into OS X and it can't be upgraded separately unlike iPhoto.

Thank you for replying so quickly. Is there any way to upgrade from iPhotos 8 to iPhotos 9? My Mac App Store is not showing it as available

was with a friend just yesterday trying to migrate from iphoto 7 to photos. there are upgrade apps on apple's site. but... seems she needs to BUY ilife with iphotos 9, move to that, and THEN she can import her library into photos. ugh....

You probably have to purchase it from eBay or other such source.

You might want to first try export/import options, they might work assuming you don't have much Metadata.

Well if you don't need to photos without the Meta Data you could take the Masters folder and put them into a new Photos Library.

i did that for myself. just dragged all my iphoto pix into a folder, and moved them into photos when i moved to 10.11. for my friend, it's all albums and metadata. and it's a lot of content. apparently, she went to apple today and they're dealing with it; will find out what they did (and report back!)
