Hi everyone,

I need your advice regarding data migration from an old iPhone to a new one. The scenario is as follows:
My girlfriend has an iPhone 4S running latest iOS 8. I bought her iPhone 5S for Christmas and I'm pretty sure that it'll have iOS 7 on board - the problem is you can't restore back up of iOS 8 onto iOS 7.
The only solution I had found so far is to set up the iOS 7 phone, update software, reset (wipe) and then set up again using old phone's back up. The problem is this route is a bit tedious and I experienced it when I wanted to restore a Time Machine back up of my old MBP running Yosemite onto a new Retina Mac which had Mavericks on board. It wasn't a nice and easy solution I would expect from Apple :)
So my question is, can I update the new iPhone without setting it up? If I connect it to iTunes will it let me update its software, so then I could restore the old phone's data into it without all the hassle of setting up > resetting > restoring from back up?
