In migrating from my old phone to the new iPhone 13 Pro Max, I ran the backup and restore as documented. When complete, I compared the number of photos from old phone to new phone. I was over 100+ photos that did not get restored.

I literally went photo by photo and here is what I found. If the photo was in my photos library, but showed "from xxx (person's name)" when looking at the photo, it did not get migrated to the new phone. This accounted for every picture missing after the migration.

Has anyone seen this or know of this issue? Both phones running 15.2.1.

The photos that say "from xxx (person's name)" are actually photos that are in your Messages, and aren't stored in your photos library. They will eventually show up there once your new phone has had time to index all your content (assuming you restored all your old messages too).

If you want them to stay in your photos library, be sure to save them. Otherwise, they'll be gone when you delete them in Messages.
