Does Migration Assistant give you the choice to select which apps and programs to migrate to a new computer or is it an all or nothing type of thing?

Migration Assistant and apps

So I'm wondering what happens if I install a couple of apps on my new computer and then I run migration assistant and there is an older version on my mac that I'm migrating from. Is it smart enough to know that there is already a newer version of that app already installed and leave it alone, or does it just copy everything over without checking.
