So i've got a MBP 13'' and a 27'' iMac. I recently downloaded and installed Mountain lion on the iMac, and everything went perfectly fine. However, it was not so with my MBP, and I ended up having to erase the HD and reinstall Lion. Now I am currently in the process of transferring files from my iMac to my MBP via migration assistant. The wait time is a bit longer than I would like, and I would prefer to just try again tonight before I go to bed. So my question is there a way to SAFELY stop the migration assistant? i dont mind if i have to reinstall Lion on my MBP, I just want to know that all of my files on my iMac will be safe before I stop.

I have seen that using cmd Q worked for some, but I would just like to make sure this is a viable and safe option.
