I've been using Migration Assistant to Move from a MB with Lion 10.4.11 to a MBP ML 10.8.2.
Migration Assistant will not "find" the Macbook disc (in Target Mode via Firewire) or a cloned external drive. Both of the drives are recognized by the (newer) MBP when NOT using migration.
I have used Migration assistant many times with many machines without problem, including migrating to Mountain Lion.
Things I've checked include
software up to date on both machines
hardware testing both machines
disk first aid run on both machines
cables and connections
unselecting "Back to my Mac" in iCloud
reports of fixes on this and other forums
I'd really like to avoid re-installing software and re-doing preferences after transfering data by moving folders.
Any suggestions besides complaining in person at an Apple store? Apple Help on the phone insists the only "fix" is to pay a "Genius" $99 to do the migration.
