Migrations assistant won’t migrate between Macbooks running diff Catalina versions

I ran into the issue where migration assistant says I have to update Catalina before I can migrate data from my macbook running a slightly newer version of Catalina (source MBP is 10.14.4 , target MBP is 10.14.3 ) .

It prompts me to update , I click “update” which then fails.

Could you tell us WHAT you are trying to migrate?
Just a few files or libraries?
Or... everything?

If migration assistant won't work, there are "other alternatives".

Everything, absolutely everything.


I took the long route and set the Macbook Pro up as a new computer , upgraded it to MacOS to Catalina 10.15.4 from Catalina 10.15.3, and ran Migration assistant . That worked.

But I should not have had to do that .

Everything, absolutely everything.

Including in "everything" are things which are macOS version specific. So it must be right that you are not allowed to migrate those to a different version.
