iPad mini Mini 1 Smart Cover doesn't work on Mini 4

This is a little more difficult to analyze. With 3 generations between, the cellular radio, screen, touch ID, battery... everything has changed, even the form factor although the shape is roughly similar.

If you really want to save you can grab some of those rare earth magnets that you can get off e.g. AliExpress and "mod" your smart cover... but frankly I'd just buy a new one. I mean... the original iPad mini is 3 years old....
 
I'm too ocd to put an old and WELL used smart cover on a brand spankin' new ipad!

it doesn't seem like I've had my original for 3 years already (well... 3 years in November.... I had to wait cuz I ordered cellular)

Well, my wife just bought a mini 4 and a Smart Cover, and it was an older smart because it too seems small and it doesn't do the wake/sleep. Did they do away with that feature?

Only the smart covers specifically for the mini 4 work with the wake/sleep.

@ZBoater just return the cover that your wife bought. Apple has a 14 day return window anyway - then make sure you get the one that works with the iPad mini 4.

My Mini 4 Smart Cover works great. I'm using it right now. You do have to go into the settings and turn on the activation.

Yup, just got back from the store. They had them in the back, not out for display. The genius that sold my wife her mini didn't know about them. Sigh. Well, at least I got my wife to pay for my Smart Cover. Thank God for small favors.

Just got home and setting up my new Mini 4. Bought a new smart cover and glad I found this thread, back to the store tomorrow. Magnet doesn't hold and sleep not working grrr...

Yeah, make sure it says Mini 4 on the front of the box, and don't believe the Genius that says "oh, they all work the same".

Yup that's what happened. Just got off the phone with Apple, no stores in my area have the covers in stock So Apple is overnighting one for no charge because I'm traveling for work for three weeks on Saturday. That's typical great Apple customer service, and no I didn't ask for freebies. :)

THIS..!

Someone needs to tell Frank at the Fifth Ave Apple Store that the old covers aren't compatible.

I told him twice and he was still adamant. Said that nobody had them in store yet but they'd be first.

So I just went to the Grand Central store instead and purchased a midnight blue cover!
 
Yep, my apple store genius at the same thing. They are deafly not trained to know that they don't work on the newer iPad mini
