iPad Mini 5 only has Touch ID 1..... :/

I went to the Brighton Apple store (UK) and compared the specs of the Air 3 and Mini 5.

The Air 3 states clearly that it has Touch ID 2 where as the Mini 5 only states Touch ID.

I went and had a chat with a Genius who confirmed that the new Mini 5 only has Touch ID 1.

This makes absolutely no sense to me... maybe someone forgot to add the 2 in the specs.. I hope so as I want to get a Mini 5 come payday:)
 
Mini 5 has the exact same Touch ID as the 6S generation of iPhones. There seems to be some confusion about which “generation” that is, but I can confirm it is: 1) Much faster than Mini 4, and 2) Still a physical button that depresses (not haptic).

I’m pretty sure that you’re getting false information.

That would be Touch ID gen. 2, much faster than gen. 1...I had iPhone 6, 6s, 7, the 6s had much, much faster touch ID...7 same. (EDIT: haptic has nothing to do with touch id. The place you put your finger, whether a physical button or just a round spot that looks like a button, has touch ID sensors on top of that button/round spot.)
 
To be honest I cannot see a difference in speed between mini 4 and 5 touch id. They both seem as fast (and fast enough by the way...)

I had the air 2 and the 6S plus which did have Touch ID 2. I used them side by side and the air 2 did not have Touch ID.
 
Could you provide a link to this please? Also why is the “5” handwritten?

Apple have been officially referring to the Mini 5 as the iPad Mini (including on the box.) That’s in contrast to the Mini 4, where unboxing pictures/videos show that they used iPad Mini 4 on packaging.

Gotcha.
That’s interesting, I’m pretty sure I’ve checked the comparison page before and it never specified the generation of Touch ID for any of the ipads. Or maybe I just missed it. In any case, having owned the mini 4, as others have said, I’m certain it has first generation Touch ID. It’s the same speed as my SE, while 2nd gen is instantaneous. It has to be an error.

Sorry, I don’t understand what this is supposed to mean. I know se has first gen Touch ID and 8 has second gen.
 
According to Wiki the Mini 5 has Gen 2 and the Mini 4 Gen 1. I can believe that the Mini 4 only has Gen 1, as new features tend to start on the phones (6s) before they get to the iPad line.
 
Apple’s website also says the current 6th and previous 5th gen 9.7” iPads have Gen 2 but I’m pretty sure that’s wrong too. I had a Mini 4 alongside a 6S for almost three years and the 6S Touch ID was much faster, no comparison really, so I don’t believe the Mini 4 had Gen 2.

I test drove a Mini 5 for 13 days and Touch ID was blazing fast like the 6S and my 10.5” Pro.

Both the iPad 5 and 6 have gen 1. Do a side by side with the iPhone 6s, 7 or 8 with one of those iPads and you’ll notice it has gen 1.
