for those of you who own or have tried both which one looks better? i havent heard anything about the mini display to hdmi yet besides that it was finally released.

I own both adapters and have used them extensively with my 13" uMB. In general I would agree with jessica. - I prefer the HDMI adapater. This is noticably better if your using it under OSX with Plex or Front Row and playing HD content. However, if you are trying to use the machine under Bootcamp in Windows the mDP>HDMI adapter has several issues with the HDCP handshake so the VGA adapter would be your best bet, simply because it's an analog connection so bypasses the need for the handshake. Bootcamp/Windows use in general though would likely be limited to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD playback as almost everything else you can do (and do better) under OSX already.
