I need both DVI and VGA connections.

In an effort to save some money, could I buy the mini displayport to DVI cord and then one of these?

there are only so many combinations.

you could do

Mini DP->VGA
Mini DP->DVI

or

Mini DP->VGA, then use a VGA to DVI adaptor (and vice versa)

The mini-DP is made so that it does not have the 4 analog pins, and so you cannot use the dvi to vga adapter on the end of it. Way to go apple.

If you're looking to save some dough, pick up a mini5@ to dvi and miniDP to vga from monoprice.com; they make their own 3rd party adapters that are significantly cheaper. I think that both adapters from them cost the same as 1 from apple.

Cheers.

*MiniDP to dvi. Sorry. My phone is screwy and won't let me edit properly.

No.

The MDP>DVI adapter is DVI-I, and hence only supports digital video - there are no analogue pins. This means there'd be no signal sent to any VGA cable that was plugged in via another adapter.

Stuck with more adapters basically.

The MDP-->DVI is DVI-D, making it digital only. The "I" notation would mean digital and analog.
