mini displayport to displayport no longer works

Hi, I have a 17 inch MBP (first i7) and Dell's 27 inch monitor (2560X1440). To get full resolution I can use the dual link DVI or displayport. The former requires Apple's expensive adaptor, the later requires a 5 dollar mini displayport to display port cable not sold by apple. I did the later, but it stopped working, I've tried multiple cables. Did Apple kill this functionality with an update? Does anyone else use this cable?
