Ordered a refurb the other day -- MBP15, 2.2 -- and want to run my Eizo S2410 display with it at 1920 x 1200. Will a cheap, after-market mini display to DVI cable work with the Thunderbolt port? I didn't see where the Apple brand cable specifically mentioned Thunderbolt.

Yes, it might work, depending on the QUALITY of that cheap product.
To learn more about Thunderbolt (TB) and its compatibility with Mini DisplayPort (MDP):

If it works with Mini DisplayPort it should work with Thunderbolt. I use Apple's MD to DVI adaptor with a thunderbolt port.

Thanks, both of you. I knew TB was faster but had no idea it was that fast. I'll likely just get the Apple branded cable to be safe, even though it's more expensive.

I'm sure I'll be back with more questions; I'm upgrading to the MBP from my G5 tower and feel like a beginner all over again.

Thanks again!

Edd
