Mini Displayport to DVI not working!

Macbook Pro --> MiniDisplay port to DVI adaptor --> DVI cable to monitor

I have the newer i5 Macbook pro and a Samsung Syncmaster 225BW, and when I connect the monitor via a MiniDisplay port to DVI adaptor, my laptop recognises the screen but doesn't output anything onto the screen!

I've also tried to connect my laptop to a HDtv and that worked, so pretty sure not the adaptor!

Any ideas what is wrong with the chain of connections??

Edit: When I connected to the TV I was using a DVI-HDMI cable btw.
SORTED OUT COMPLETELY, sorry faulty DVI cable
