The mini display to HDMI cable only puts out 2.1 Ch via Audio/Midi configuration, sometimes VLC puts out 5.1 Ch though but not with every Mac.

My best advice is to use an optical audio cable with your surround receiver if you want surround sound :)

Thanks but a bit sad the iMAC system cannot utilize the Amplifier ... :(:(:(:(:(

What about the Mac-mini as this carry the HDMI ...
 
Mac Mini I'm not sure maybe bootcamp?
But an optical audio cable between you're mac and you're TV works perfect that's how I do it ;)
The audio jack next to your regular aux output is Optical :)
