Mini-DVI or Not

I'm a new Macbook Pro owner. The Apple website describes the external monitor connection as "mini-DVI". I purchased an adapter that was listed as mini-dvi for Macbook, but it is substantially larger than the connection on the Macbook. What is the proper name for the size adapter I really need? Mini-mini? What do I really need to connect to an external DVI monitor?
 
If it's a new MBP, you need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI cable. There is a picture of the Mini DisplayPort connection here.
