I have a 20" Aluminum iMac and a Provision 22" TV, with a VGA input. I tried connecting a Windows laptop, which had a vga port built in, to it and the picture quality was great, every pixel on the TV was used. The native resolution of the TV is 1680x1050, just like my iMac.
I connected the TV to my mac with the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. When I went to system preferences and put the resolution to 1680x1050, the TV said "1920x1080". And everything is "squished", pixels are blended together, though it's kinda hard to see in the picture. Apparently the TV thinks it's getting a 1080p resolution. Weird.
