Can someone explain exactly what I need in order to connect a new iPad Mini 6 to my mid-2015 MacBook Pro?

The iPad has a USB-C to USB-C cable which is not compatible with my MBP

MBP has USB-A and Thunderbolt ports.....

I want the simplest, most straight-forward solution eg 1 cable, no adapter gizmo (if possible) just to attach the 2 devices so I can back-up the Mini to my computer (I don't use iCloud for that) from time to time.
Would 1 cable (USB-C to USB-A) work?
That's essentially what I do with my iPhone XR and old iPad Mini 4 (using USB-A to USB-A cable)

Thanks in advance for suggestions......

USB A to USB C
That's what I was hoping. Are you sure?
Apple say an Adapter is required.
Then they said I need "Male" this and "Female" that...
And then B&H said both ends should be Male and.....
I guess I could just buy the bloody cable and return if it doesn't work - but would prefer to get it right in the 1st place

You'll need something like this.

Yeah the cable @BigMcGuire suggested will do the job. I would suggest looking for a USB 3.1 to USB C for faster data transfers. If you are only doing it once and a while the USB2.0 linked above will be just fine.

But my XR cable is USB-A to USB-A. It won't attach to Mini 6
Am I missing something? It's very confusing....
I meant in the scenario you gave it would be the same usb a to usb c. Seems like incredibly basic stuff you should know.
