Is there any difference between this:

Simply put, why spend more at Newegg, when Monoprice costs significantly less?

There is no discernible difference between the two. In fact the monoprice cable even has gold-plating on the tips. (not that it's important in this application) Newegg just has a higher markup.

Optical = digital audio, so there should be no difference when using different cables.

Is it seriously gold plated? Absolutely pointless (as you said) as it is not conducting electricity but passing light through the cable.
