Mini USB Gamepad

I was wondering if anyone uses a Walmart mini usb gamepad, called "Gamemon." It was a cheap chinese usb pad that works well with Windows, but I can't get the 8-way directional pad to work with OSX emulators. Only the buttons map. Does anyone use this gamepad with their laptops, and if so, could you share how you are able to get the directional buttons to work? (I've tried USB Overdrive and Gamepad Companion, but I was unable to get the directionals to work)

Try holding down R1 when you plug in the USB to force compatibility, works with some controllers.

When you can pick up an Xbox controller and have it just work for way cheap, this chinamade no-brand stuff doesn't seem worth it to me.
