My new iMac arrives in a few days (wiiii) - just getting all my cables and other things ready - I would like to connect it to my HDTV for watching movies etc, and assume HDMI is the best way to go.

Is this what I need to get? (plus an HDMI cable of course)

Any alternatives?

Also does anyone know if I would be able to connect to my TV AND an external monitor at the same time?

Thanks in advance....

eBay is good place to look for adapters and stuff, most of them are reputable.

To connect two external video devices, you need either USB video adapter or Matrox DualHead

I'll be getting one of these:

Same as above from Hellhammer, but from a company that I am aware of and have a good reputation

I bought mine for my MBPuni. I didn't notice until after i bought mine from Monoprice.com that the cable i got wasn't the version which also transfers audio, as well as the video.

Just make sure you buy the right version of the cable...

Thanks guys for all the info.

Plenty of options it seems. Still dont really understand why Apple doesnt put an HDMI output right into the iMacs anyway, but then again its prob the same reason they dont add bluray.

Maybe they will next year. I think I'm correct in saying the latest Mac Mini has a HDMI slot, so who knows??

..still, this isn't too expensive an add on...for a change :p

What you're doing is this: outtputting from mini-DP, then inputting from HDMI.

As people correctly pointed out, this is a breeze with a simple adapter.

And as people who try to use their Apple LED Cinemas with non-Macs know, the real pain is doing the opposite, trying to output from HDMI then input via mini-DP.

That's why the decision to go with mini-DP instead of the DVI/HDMI standard is a big deal. There an inherent incompatibility in one direction that cannot be fixed by a simple 5 dollar adapter.
