I got an older LCD monitor for free from my friend. I wanted to hook it up as a second display on this iMac. The LCD monitor only has the VGA connection for input, however included with it was a DVI>VGA converter so one could hook it up via DVI (but get analog only signal obviously)

My iMac is a previous generation one with the miniDVI port. My thinking was, if I purchased the miniDVI>DVI adapter I could hook up the external LCD via the DVI>VGA adapter I got with it. The logic here was that the miniDVI>DVI adapter would be more useful than paying $30 for the miniDVI>VGA adapter which likely could not be used on future monitors I would ever hook up. The miniDVI>DVI adapter, however, I could likely use with other monitors in the future, thus saving a re-buy of an adapter.

Would this work? Or does the miniDVI>DVI adapter not support DVI>VGA adapters?

From Wikipedia:

Apple's Mini-DVI to DVI-D cable does not carry the analog signal coming from the mini-DVI port on the Apple computer. This means that instead of buying a single mini-DVI cable from Apple and using a cheap DVI-to-VGA adaptor when you need VGA output, you must purchase a mini-DVI to VGA cable from Apple. This could be solved if Apple provided a mini-DVI to DVI-I cable. The purpose of DVI-I is to ensure universal compatibility.

So no, this probably will not work.

Too bad, as I feared.

Guess I have to buy that miniDVI>VGA adapter

Thanks for the info
