iPod touch Minimal data usage

Just picked up a 3g wifi internet hub to pair with an iPod touch. I'm interested in keeping usage low (like under 100mb/mo) and wondering what apps or customizations I can try to cut out all other data transmission besides Mail/Safari.

Just need it for routinely checking email when I'm on the go.

A software based firewall is what I'm looking for. Only one I could find was Firewall iP.

This will help hugely because some days it seems my device transfers 30MB without intervention.
