Minimize button randomly vanishes

Sometimes when I'm working with a lot of programs at once or even running VMware my minimize button on all my OS X programs like iChat or Firefox disappears. Usually if I close the window and reopen it appears, but not always. Any reason for this or has anyone else experienced it?
