in a previous version of mac os, i was able to set this up....i just got a new macbook and i dont remember how to do this....any help?
 
That feature no longer exists I'm afraid :)
The yellow button minimizes the window to the Dock, as close as you can get to what I think you are describing.
 
Exposé can clear away all your open apps to the edges of the screen, just go into System Prefs and set up the corners in the Exposé and Spaces icon.
 
yup, just choose desktop in exposes hot corners...

Ohh, I thought the OP was referring to the collapse window button (in the corner) from Mac OS 9, my bad.
