My current iMac has an AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x142) device (which supports 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac).

The 2020 iMac Pro says it has:
  • 802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless networking
  • IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n compatible
Is that essentially the same, or any difference?

Airport Extreme is Apple's router wifi solution, are you sure that you're referring to this?

IF your question is:
(1) your iMac has built in wifi adapter that support 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac; and
(2) 2020 iMac Pro has "802.11ac WiFi wireless networking" and it is "IEEE 802.11a/b/g/c compatible

YES, 1 & 2 are the same, just the way they put the description
