Apple has really worked on getting the Vision Pro integration with a separate Mac up to a 1.0 level, i.e. where it should have been when they released the Vision Pro. At this point, most of the audio glitches are worked out, so now your Mac's audio output can actually get to your ears via the Vision Pro -- I know, a pretty obvious requirement that took forever to deliver, but it's here and it works. Even video from the Mac will usually play via the Vision Pro, although the support here is still a bit spotty (probably because Google is dragging its heels on YouTube to avoid delivering support for the Vision Pro). But for the most part, it works. Mouse and keyboard integration finally works as well. So things are pretty good, right?
Yes, things are pretty good. But there are still a few obvious "wish list" items that need to be addressed to provide a solid customer experience:
* Security: If it's done a retinal scan on the Vision Pro and knows who I am, it should be able to leverage that to unlock my Mac, my iPhone (without taking off the goggles), etc. This is so obvious the first time you try to use your iPhone with the headset on!
* Mac Virtual Display on the Vision Pro still has a number of rough edges. For starters, when I put on the Vision Pro and open my Macbook Pro, the floating button for the option to connect appears over the MacBook Pro, but IT NEVER WORKS THE FIRST TIME unless I wait an additional 5-8 seconds before clicking it. Obviously, the Vision Pro can "see" the Macbook Pro, but the network stack isn't yet at a point that the connection will work, so it then takes 20 seconds or so to timeout while attempting to connect, and then the second attempt always works immediately. (Or instead of waiting for the 20 second timeout, I can just pause for a few seconds before attempting to connect the first time.)
* Having connected, if I have to take of the headset for a few seconds to do something else, when I put it back on, I have to start all over again. Here's the thing: I want seamless connectivity, and this isn't hard to understand: If I take off the headset, then put it back on, I want to see the Mac Virtual Display where it was, just like every other app on the Vision Pro works. (See also: security bullet point above.) To be fair, at least once I re-connect the Mac Virtual Display, it remembers the layout from my previous session mere seconds or minutes ago, which is quite helpful and appreciated.
So at this point, the Vision Pro seems to be in a late beta 1.0 stage. There are still a few rough edges, but Apple has nailed 98% of what it needs to handle for this to be a useful, valuable tool for someone who uses a Mac. This is the most expensive Mac monitor I've ever had, and I had 2x of the Thunderbolt monitors which together cost less than the Vision Pro, but right now I'm in the office working with a 7 meter Vision Pro virtual display instead of my 3.5m curved projector screen and my (ii) 43" 4k monitor ... this thing is pretty hard to beat now that it works.
