mirror display without losing resolution

how do i mirror my cinema display with my macbook air without losing resolution. the guy at the apple store did it by dragging the two onto each other in system preferences, but thats not working for me.

I'm fairly certain that's impossible to do without dropping to the resolution of the lower display
