So is it possible to mirror Mac's screen to iPad using VLC for example? I would like to watch Hulu, for example with this.

Even in local network not fluid? AirPlay can be fluid, so why cannot VLC's stream?

Because AirPlay is specifically optimised for Mac/iPad/iPhone to Apple TV and it all runs custom software/firmware. As soon as a third-party who doesn't have access to this comes riding into the equation, you get lag and latency. There's no way of doing this as smoothly. There's lots on Google about it though.

TeamViewer works quite nicely, but I cannot get audio to work. Any advice on this?

Another issue is, that when I set quality to high, the resolution is bad for ipad (the video is not middle of ipad's screen).

I use AirDisplay, but for video I don't think it works too well. As a second display it's fine.
